Judge Comment: “Sound Journeys” is a unique series told in a delightful combination of platforms. It captivates from the beginning with a well- written Editor’s Note that entices readers to turn the page. Stunning photographs show destinations around the world that have amazing sounds, and an expanded online slide show gives a deep dive into the photographs. The gem of this package is the easily accessible Spotify playlist that allows listeners to hear music and sounds while learning about each destination. The articles are exquisitely written, transporting readers to each locale and immersing them in the sounds of travel.

Judge Comment: Bloomberg’s “Where to Go 2020” project is packaged in an array of different media, beginning with a beautifully designed, succinct article in Bloomberg Pursuits magazine that introduces the 24 locations. The destination descriptions are expanded in the online display, with graphics, additional photographs, helpful bullet points, links and a longer article. The short, looping video adds visual variety. A fun addition to the project is the 10-minute Bloomberg Travel Genius podcast. Finally, a short video shows photographs of the locations and lists the best time to visit. There is something for every type of viewer in this comprehensive package.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Travel + Leisure
Entry Title: World's Best Restaurants 2019
    Entry Credit: Besha Rodell
Judge Comment: This ambitious series covers the 30 best restaurants in the world and sends one writer to sample them all. However, this is about much more than meals, as readers learn about the people and their culture. The print article is beautifully designed and yummy to view, and the text eloquently re-creates the atmosphere of each restaurant and meal. The online component expands the reporting, providing rich details about the Puerto Rican chef who feeds people after Hurricane Maria, the Slovenian farmhouse restaurant surrounded by adventure activities and the Peruvian restaurant overlooking Incan ruins in the Andes. The package is rounded out with several videos about travel in the featured countries. This is a joy to view and read.
