104b Travel Coverage in General Magazines ( Travel Coverage in General Magazines)Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: Outside
    Entry Title: Outside Magazine

Judge Comment: The travel coverage in Outside harnessed the moments and mood of the past year. A risky “Journeys” issue turned into a special armchair travel edition that allowed readers to embrace wanderlust even while confined by stay-at-home orders. A camping package featured varied writing styles that kept the content interesting, from confessional first-person pieces on glamping and camping alone to bright service journalism that outlines everything a reader would want. One of the most powerful and poignant pieces was a follow-up to a 2018 article by Latria Graham about the challenging experiences and risks of being a Black woman (and family) exploring the outdoors.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Midwest Living
    Entry Title: Midwest Living
Entry Credit: Timothy Meinch, Kylee Krizmanic, Hannah Agran
Judge Comment: The travel content in this magazine is impeccably paced and starts with quick hits filled with curated content and picks from books to experiences. Small maps, colorful and engaging photography complement the writing that balances useful and educational to eye-opening and aspirational. The writing captures food, culture, history, and architecture through all sections of the Travel department (Wanderlist, Journey, Backroad) as well as the special Out & About bonus content.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: National Parks Magazine
    Entry Title: National Parks magazine
Entry Credit: Rona Marech, Nicolas Brulliard, Nicole Yin, Katherine DeGroff
Judge Comment: The writers in National Parks magazine are allowed a healthy amount of real estate to explore their topics, and readers get to sink into long, luxurious features that satisfy from beginning to end. So often travel coverage is offered in bite-sized what-you-need-to-know pieces, and this magazine turns that principle on its head. A theme of travel helping with pandemic blues or The Beast, as one writer dubbed it, ran throughout the three issues. The first-person articles were penned with authority, and the reported pieces grounded in their information gathering.
  • Place Name: Honorable Mention
    Contestant Name: Yankee
    Entry Title: Yankee Magazine
    Entry Credit: Staff
Judge Comment: Yankee magazine knows its region and readers and provides exceptional travel content with weekend getaways that offer day-by-day itineraries and topical picks for "The Best 5" (family beaches, scenic fall drives). The"Float Your Boat" feature package was particularly well-executed with a chart on what animals you can see, and where-to stories on cruises, ferries, yachts and museum ships. The topic was covered from bow to stern.
