  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: Smithsonian Magazine
    Entry Title: The Inner Passage
    Entry Credit: Virginia Richards
Judge Comment: History is today, in Virginia Richards’ wet plate collodion prints. Dripping trees and fading grave markers speak of a tragic past, when enslaved people were forced to dig the Inner Passage, a waterway from South Carolina to Florida. These sad, eerie photographs show viewers ancient oaks, or “witness trees” that "witnessed" historic events, and a “burnt church” that is hundreds of years old.
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: The New York Times
Entry Title: The Stunning Grandeur of Soviet-Era Metros
    Entry Credit: Frank Herfort
Judge Comment: The color, grandeur, symmetry and spectacle of these underground stations will take your breath away. This collection builds on itself to create a feeling of awe for the architecture and artistic beauty, which are captured so well in photography done at night when stations were devoid of crowds.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Smithsonian Magazine
Entry Title: Passage Through the Zagros
    Entry Credit: Emily Garthwaite
Judge Comment: This photo story provides an intimate glimpse of a seldom-seen tradition as it follows the extended Mokhtari family, members of the Bakhtiari tribe, on a treacherous seasonal migration through the Zagros Mountains in Western Iran. The photographer has an astounding eye for light and also has the ability to photograph people who are unaware of the camera. The piece includes stunning landscapes, people carrying sheep on their backs to cross rivers, food rituals and gorgeous portraits.
  • Place Name: Honorable Mention
    Contestant Name: Outside
Entry Title: The Future of Nature Therapy is Psychedelic
    Entry Credit: Olivia Bee
Judge Comment: The dreamy images work as illustrations to show what it might be like to partake in this psychedelic therapy. This conceptual photo essay is a perfect choice for this subject.
