1988 SATW FOUNDATION
LOWELL THOMAS TRAVEL JOURNALISM COMPETITION

In the fourth annual competition, a third-place award, called second runner-up, was started. The newspaper travel section and magazine categories were given subcategories, with newspapers split by circulation and magazines by frequency of publication. Two categories were added, cultural tourism article and reporting on the economic significance of the travel industry.

Monetary awards remained the same: $1,000 to the Travel Journalist of the Year and $500 to the (first) runner-up, with $500 to firstplace winners in other categories but no monetary prize in newspaper section and magazine categories.

Judges were faculty members at the Missouri School of Journalism, with Prof. Don Ranly, associate dean, as the coordinator.
