37+ Years of Rewarding Journalists for Outstanding Work in the Field The SATW Foundation sponsors the annual Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition.

The first contest honored work done in 1984. Today the Foundation awards more than $22,000 annually in prize money for outstanding print, online and multimedia works and for travel photography and both audio and video broadcast. It is the premier competition in North America in the field of travel journalism. It has gained its stature for several reasons, most notably:

H1 2021 Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Awards

The H1 is a top-level heading, probably best used for main headlines at the top of the page. H1s get a little more attention from Google’s cataloging of sites so it’s good to have headlines that help with your SEO tagged as H1s. But use sparingly, or they will lose their power. This heading is uppercase Roboto (the only sans serif we’re using on the site).  It will appear in uppercase regardless of how the text is entered. These first four H-tags are all using the dark teal color of the site’s nav bar as well. The H5 and H6 are not in color, since the intention is for them to be used on blocks of text copy.

Note: all of these descriptive blocks of copy are styled as “paragraphs.”

H2 2021 Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Awards

The H2 heading  is just a step under the H1 in terms of size and emphasis. It can be used as a subhead with an H1, or as a headline of its own lower on the page. This one is set in the serif font Garamond (same as the body copy) to give an alternative to always having sans serif headlines.

H3 2021 Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Awards

A slightly smaller sans serif heading, H3 is good for subheads. or headings of lower-level blocks of content.

—–

H4 2021 Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Awards

Another all uppercase option, the H4 is once again Roboto, all cap. It is good for use as a sub-subhead or the heading of a small box of copy.

—–

H5 2021 Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Awards

The H5 heading is not intended to be a heading style at all, but a smaller, sans serif body style, suitable for captions or shorter blocks of copy set off from the normal body copy, or “paragraph” style.

H6 2021 Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Awards

The H6 is similar to the H5 above. It’s best for small text, captions, disclaimers, etc. Basically a serif (Garamond) version of the H5.
